TOUR EN OVALLE

THE ENCHANTADED VALLEY:
Valle del Encanto is home to the Ovalle region`s pertoglyphs, ancient religios Rock engravings left by the Molle people aproximately 4000 years ago. The park contains numerous examples of these, as well as interesting rock formations, places of Molle dwelling and indigenous flora.
The valley itself is an attractive example of the area`s typical terrain, complete with a tranquil stream. The park has picnic facilities and entrance includes an informative brochure on the area and people.

He should drop you at a cross-road with a sign pointing towards Valle del Encanto. Walk in direction indicated for aproximately 4 kms and you will reach the park.

FRAY JORGE NATIONAL PARK :

This area was declared a National Park in 1941, and in 1977 it became part of World Reserve of the Biosphere. This national park is situated in the coastal area of the Limari zone, about 45 km east of Ovalle.
It is 9,959 hectares big and its altitude ranges between 0 and 667 meters.

It is home to a wide range of fauna and flora. Flowering season is between October and November when the landscape transforms into natural wonderland. Animals such as rabbits, foxes, quails, owls and eagles can be seen and you may even catch a glimpse of the elusive mountain cat, puma or guanaco. Along the coast, you can expect to see sea lions, sea otters and a variety of migratory birds, which breed and rest in the Limari estuary.

A the highest point of the park you can find hydrophillic wood, similar to that found in the Valdivia region. There are cinnamon trees, olive trees, and ferns that have survived since prehistoric times because of the condensation of the coastal mist.
The number of visitors is limited, aiding to the preservation of the park including the prevention of possible fires.

Tour with Jaime's Crazy House
Price: 25.000 Chilean Pesos per person
Duration: 1 day (only Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. In summer it is open from Thursday to Sunday)
Start: 9 am.

Tour on your own
Warning, transportation can be tricky.
Instructions:
Part 1:
Ovalle to Quebrada Seca. Take the Micros to Quebrada Seca (CH 800). It departs one block away from Jaimes Crazy House. An 08:15 micro arrives around 09:15 in Quebrada Seca. Walk to Ruta 5, only metres away.
Part 2:
Quebrada Seca to the access road for Parque Fray Jorge (all via Ruta 5). I tried for 90 minutes to hitch a ride on Ruta 5. The buses to Santiago do not stop. You may be lucky as there is a truck stop at the overpass. I walked 8km south to the access road, following Ruta 5 (every kilometre along Ruta 5 is marked, so you will know you have walked 8km).
The access road is just past the Carabineros checkpoint on the highway, behind a fruit and cheese stand (vehicles have to enter further south down the highway, and double back). The access road is unpaved, and is very obvious with a large sign indicating how far away the park entry and cloud forest are (roughly 25km and 35km, respectively), right next to a cattleguard.
Part 3:
Access road for Parque Fray Jorge to the cloud forest. Hitching a lift is the only feasible way in and out for a day trip. While you wait, you might enjoy the fresh food from the fruit and cheese stand. Remember from the park entry, there are approximately 10km more to the cloud forest along a rough, uphill road. At the end of the road is a 1km walking circuit.
Getting back to Ovalle:
Hitch a lift to at least Ruta 5, and perhaps even Quebrada Seca. The last micro from Quebrada Seca to Ovalle (CH 800) leaves the parada around 18:15. If you don’t think you can make this, hitch a lift instead to the Ruta 5 and Ruta 45 junction (near Socos, south of the park access). At the toll booth on Ruta 45 is a parada, where buses from Santiago will stop on their way to Ovalle (CH 1.000).

SENDERO CHILE:

Transport: One block away from Jaimes Crazy House are collectivos (CH 2.000) to Pichasca. Ask the driver to drop you at the Sendero de Chile trailhead. The trailhead is very well marked and is just before the bridge crossing Río Hurtado in Samo Alto.
Trail: There are two, independent sections to the Sendero de Chile. The section of interest here goes to the hamlet of San Pedro de Pichasca, following the Río Hurtado. It is about 6km in length and is very easy to follow, taking a leisurely 2 to 2.5 hours. There are gorgeous views of the Río Hurtado valley throughout, and three strategic miradors. Other points of interest are marked on the trail. The trail drops you right in San Pedro de Pichasca. (The other section of the Sendero de Chile goes to Las Minillas, and is 14km in length, and requires doubling back for return transport to Ovalle.)
Monumento Natural Pichasca: From the end of the trail in San Pedro de Pichasca, just follow the road straight ahead, passing the plaza and church. A large sign indicates that the Monumento Natural Pichasca is 2km away. Follow the road uphill to the park entrance (CH 1.600 entry). The park has a 3km walking circuit.
Return: Walk back to the plaza and church in San Pedro de Pichasca (2km). Take the road going downhill to cross the bridge over the Río Hurtado. The parada marked San Pedro is just uphill from the bridge on the main road. Collectivos pass regularly (CH 2.000 to Ovalle).

We leave the hostel in Ovalle at 7 am and head for Vicuña. First we visit the Monument Natural de Pichasca. Afterwards, we continue driving to Vicuña. The scenery along this road is magnificent and there will have plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos.
When we reach the town of Vicuña, we stop for lunch at one of the Solar Restaurants. We then continue to Capel Pisco Plant, where you can take a guided tour (in Spanish or English) at a cost of 1.000 pesos. After this we visit Museo de Gabriela Mistral, Solar energy panels, Cerro la virgen and the Observatorio Mamalluca. At about 9.30 at night we leave the Observatorio Mamalluca and go for dinner at one of the beautiful seafood restaurants in La Serena. After dinner, you have the option to visit some nice bars in the city of Comquimbo. We will probably be back in Ovalle around midnight.

RIVER LOS PEÑONES:
The river is a lovely spot to visit in Ovalle. It's not far from the hostel and is a great place to have a picnic. There are also cooking facilities if you want to have a barbecue.
Eucalyptus trees surround the river banks and it's very tranquil here. You can also fish, ride a bike and of course go for a walk.
The easiest way to get here is to ask Jaime to drive you or take the car yourself!
Price: Free.
Distance: about 2 km from hostel.
